The Lotus Series came about from my walks outside. I would pass by a small pond with plant blossoms opening up on the waters surface. This started my thinking about the Lotus Flower, its beauty and symbolism. I did some research, the roots of lotus are planted in the soil of the pond or river bottom, while the leaves and blossoms float on top of the water surface or are held well above it. When night falls, the lotus closes and sinks under the water, emerging again to receive the light of a new day. Its unfolding petals suggest the expansion of the soul. The eight petals of the purple lotus are representatives of the noble eight-fold path - one of the principal teachings of the Buddha. Following this path is thought to lead to self-awakening. I titled some of the pieces Meta Lotus- Meta is a term, especially in art, used to characterize something that is characteristically self-referential. These artworks became vertical pieces, upright and part of the landscape. I imagined the modified, created and original imagery as Open to and Receiving light.
